Journals
Four times during the semester I will grade your journal. Your journal can be presented in a number of formats, my preference is a blog, where you can upload as you work. Slides or PDF are also acceptable.
Journals must include:
- Readers response (posted before the discussion of reading)
- Project Proposal/Reflection/Rubric
- Documentation of in class exercises (photos, sketch book pages, narratives)
are due on: 1/22, 2/12, 3/12, 4/23
Readers Response
For each reading you should include the following:
- The title of the chapter/reading
- The main ideas/themes
- Important or new vocabulary
- Any questions you have about the text
- personally, I argue with everything I read. If you disagree with, find a passage boring, obvious or missing something, that is important annotation!
- How the text relates to you, any connections you have with it.
Evidence of Research
- Photographs from explorations
- Notes on subjects you are interested in
- Drawings
- Notes from internet rabbit holes, chasing after your obsessions. (screenshots)
- Document conversations: take notes or make audio or video
- Pamphlets or post cards from art shows, and photos of your favorite pieces
For each project, you will be required to submit the following:
(1)project proposal at the beginning of your work
1-page, MLA formatted description of your intended work IN DETAIL.
It must include:
Abstract: a summary of your project idea
Intended materials: materials and process you will be using and why. Your material and process choice must relate to the conceptual inquiry of the work.
Project timeline: you may want to use class periods as self imposed due dates. I will check your progress in every class.
Relevance of proposal: Why is this work important? What is its function?
Documentation of in-class exercises
Each class meeting document what you have worked on. This should include: research you did on your topic, drawings, plans, brainstorms, photos of in-class experiments, narratives, poems. This is a chance for you to explore and document the messy middle of art making and reflect on your creative process. We will use the last 15 minutes of class to document and reflect on our work.
